Bringing Propane to HVAC’s Next Generation
HVAC and Plumber Technical Training was developed by the Propane Education & Research Council (PERC) and many others as part of the industry’s commitment to promote the safe and efficient use of propane gas as a preferred energy resource. The purpose of these courses are to provide current information, practices, and procedures to educate HVAC and plumbing professionals how to design, install, test, and operate propane-based HVAC and plumbing systems in a safe and efficient manner. Learn about the two levels of curriculum below, in preparation for implementing the HVAC Technical School Grant Program.

OVERVIEW OF PROPANE DISTRIBUTION SYSTEMS
The Overview of Propane Distributions Systems curriculum is an eight hour block of instruction. Everything your students need to learn the basics of safely working with propane systems is included, so adding it to your curriculum is incredibly easy.

Course Objectives

This course for plumbing and HVAC pros provides the knowledge and skills required to handle safe and effective propane HVAC installations.
- Verify that gas appliances meet code and safe operational requirements.
- Determine interior gas piping requirements.
- Identify gas system and appliance startup requirements.
- Tips on how to respond to the most recent federal water heater efficiency regulations.

Your students will be able to follow along with every block of instruction in their own student handouts. Available digitally, or you can download and print, the manual is easy to read and filled with helpful illustrations and photographs to explain key concepts of working with propane.
As an instructor you want to ensure your students are retaining the information you’re giving them. Test their knowledge of working with propane using the checks for understanding along the way. They’re designed to follow each of the blocks of instruction, for a comprehensive assessment. Answers are provided at the end of the workbook.

Grant Funding

Bring this curriculum to your school with help and support from the propane industry. With the HVAC Technical School Grant Program, you can earn extra funding to give students enhanced, real-world experience with propane, and better prepare them for the jobs of tomorrow. Through this program, you can receive up to $5,000 of grant money by incorporating the Overview of Propane Distribution Systems curriculum into your program, and completing a few other requirements like acquiring specific propane equipment and appliances that will take hands-on learning to new heights. You will also be connected with local propane companies in your area to help bring their expertise to your classroom and facilitate careers paths for interested students. HVAC AND PLUMBER TECHNICAL TRAINING
HVAC and Plumber Technical Training is a complete eighty-hour block of instruction. Everything your students need to learn the basics of safely working with propane systems is included, so adding it to your curriculum is incredibly easy.

Course Objectives

After completing this course, you will be able to:
- Identify sources, physical properties, and effects of pressure and temperature on propane.
- Identify which propane industry standards, codes, and regulations correspond to job-related tasks.
- Properly determine an effective system load.
- Identify factors affecting selection of a properly-sized container.
- Identify how to properly design, size, select, install, and test gas piping and tubing for a vapor distribution system.
- Identify the steps for selecting, sizing, and installing regulators and vapor meters.
- Identify the different vapor distribution systems and appliance checks and tests and recognize the steps to perform them.
- Explain the general procedure for placing a vapor distribution system into operation and when to make the final connection to turn on the system.
- Identify proper appliance design applications and installation methods.
- Explain how to design and supply adequate appliance combustion, dilution, and ventilation air.
- Identify appliance controls and safety devices and understand their purpose. Identify how to design, size, and install gas appliance venting systems.
- Explain the importance of proper venting, combustion air, and purging.
- Explain the basic characteristics of burning propane to include the components of a burner, air adjustments, and flame abnormalities.
