7.11 - Why Houston Wants to Lead the Next Era of Energy with Sophia Cunningham of the Houston Energy Transition Initiative

Houston has long been known as the Energy Capital of the World. But as global energy demand grows and new technologies reshape the industry, the city is working to ensure it remains at the center of the energy conversation for decades to come.

On this episode of Path to Zero, host Tucker Perkins talks with Sophia Cunningham, executive director of the Houston Energy Transition Initiative (HETI), about Houston’s evolving energy economy and the challenge of delivering energy that is affordable, reliable and increasingly lower carbon.

Founded in 2021, HETI brings together industry, academic and community partners to strengthen Houston’s position as a global energy leader while helping accelerate new technologies and value chains. Cunningham says the goal is not to move away from Houston’s traditional energy strengths, but to build on them.

“We’re going to need oil and gas for a long, long time to come,” Cunningham says. “But at the same time, we need to continue to diversify our energy mix and develop new value chains. And Houston is the greatest place to do that.”

Affordable, Reliable and Lower Emissions

Cunningham says the energy conversation has shifted in recent years, but the fundamental challenge remains the same: meeting growing demand while continuing to reduce emissions.

“We’re about all of it — affordable, reliable, lower emissions, in that order,” she says.

Houston has significant advantages in tackling that challenge. The region is home to a massive concentration of energy companies, infrastructure, engineering talent and technical expertise. Cunningham says those capabilities can increasingly be applied beyond traditional oil and gas.

One example is the rapid growth of artificial intelligence and data centers. Companies with decades of experience building equipment and infrastructure for the energy industry can apply many of those same skills to serving data centers and other emerging markets.

Houston is also seeing growth in carbon capture, advanced geothermal, synthetic fuels and other technologies that can draw upon the region’s expertise in chemical engineering, subsurface geology and large-scale industrial development.

Turning Innovation Into Commercial Technologies

While startups and entrepreneurs play an important role in developing new technologies, Cunningham says Houston’s established energy companies bring another critical ingredient: the ability to take technologies to scale.

Houston is home to hundreds of energy and climate technology startups alongside thousands of established energy firms. Cunningham says having both parts of that ecosystem in one place creates opportunities for smaller companies, researchers and major corporations to work together.

She points to federal investments in early-stage Houston energy companies that have helped produce businesses now worth billions of dollars and employing hundreds of people.

For Houston, encouraging that new company formation is about more than developing cleaner technologies. It is also an economic development strategy as the traditional oil and gas industry continues to mature, consolidate and become more efficient.

Recognizing Progress in Traditional Energy

Cunningham also discusses the progress traditional energy companies have already made in reducing the emissions associated with their operations and the difficulty of communicating those improvements to the public.

According to Cunningham, HETI member companies have invested approximately $95 billion in lower-carbon technologies since 2017. She says those companies have achieved significant reductions in both overall emissions intensity and methane emissions intensity.

An “All of the Above” Energy Future

The conversation also explores advanced nuclear power, carbon management, petrochemicals and the future role of traditional fuels.

Despite the emergence of new technologies, Cunningham does not expect the energy transition to simply eliminate existing resources.

“I really don’t think we’re going to make any one resource obsolete,” she says.

Instead, population growth and rising standards of living around the world are expected to drive continued growth in energy demand. The challenge is determining which technologies can provide that energy affordably and reliably while continuing to lower emissions.

For Houston, Cunningham says that means concentrating on areas where the region already possesses a competitive advantage, including its geology, infrastructure, workforce and concentration of energy decision-makers and using those strengths to build the next generation of energy businesses.

Ultimately, Cunningham sees Houston’s future not as a choice between traditional and emerging energy, but as an opportunity to bring the two together.
