Workhorse RTUs are Getting Smarter

Rooftop HVAC systems, also known as RTUs, have earned a reputation for providing reliable forced-air heating and cooling at an affordable capital cost. But today, manufacturers are introducing rooftop systems with new controls that can monitor operations, analyze conditions, and optimize performance, reports Joanna Turpin in ACHR News. “This new breed of smart rooftop units obviously comes with a premium price, but manufacturers are betting that system owners and operators are willing to spend in order to reap the benefits of increased energy efficiency and improved comfort,” Turpin says. In projects that lack access to natural gas, choosing a propane-fueled RTU over one using an electric heat pump can provide energy, cost, and carbon savings, enhancing the benefits of a smarter unit.
