In this episode, Tucker talks with acclaimed energy policy advisor Hal Harvey, who says individuals can make a difference and he has a new book that is a citizen’s guide on how you can combat climate change.

He teamed with award-winning New York times environmental reporter Justin Gillis on their book, The Big Fix: Seven Practical Steps to Save our Planet. It’s an examination of seven areas where communities and individuals can insert themselves into key political decisions to ensure the most climate conscious choices are being made.

Harvey is an extraordinary thinker who combines big brush stroke ideas with everyday stories of people making a difference in the world today.

About Hal Harvey

Hal Harvey is the chief executive of Energy Innovation, a nonpartisan climate policy firm that advises leaders around the world on how to drive down greenhouse gas emissions.

Since its inception in 2012, Energy Innovation has created high-quality research and analysis to help policymakers around the world understand energy policy decisions.

From 1991 to 2002, Harvey served as Founder and Chief Executive Officer of the Energy Foundation, a philanthropy supporting policy solutions that advance renewable energy and energy efficiency. He then helped establish Energy Foundation China, the European Climate Foundation, and the Indian Sustainable Energy Foundation. From 2002 to 2008, he served as Environment Program Director at the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation.

Mr. Harvey has served on energy panels appointed by Presidents Bush (41) and Clinton and has published three books and dozens of articles on energy and national security issues.

The Big Fix

In the book, Hal Harvey and co-author Justin Gillis call for people who might be climate-conscious consumers to be “climate citizens.” Harvey also encourages people to be active at the local level with school boards and public utility commissions.

“A climate citizen is somebody who uses their voice, their credibility in our political environment to cause large scale changes,” Harvey tells Tucker. “It is incredible what a dedicated individual can do if given the proper analytic tools and the proper focus.”

In addition to The Big Fix, Tucker discusses a wide range of energy topics with Harvey, including the challenge of cutting emissions in China, nuclear energy, hydrogen and his stance on creating zero carbon electricity and electrifying everything.
