Propane appliances and home systems give your customers superior comfort, greater efficiency, and lower energy costs compared with all-electric homes and 68% of builders state that it costs the same or less to build propane homes. For builders and remodelers, adding propane performance is a significant competitive advantage. With the Propane Construction Research Program, builders can earn up to $1,000 per new home by installing propane appliances and sharing installation data. Remodel projects that replace heating oil or electric appliances with propane may qualify for an additional $500. It’s a win-win for you and your customers.

Building with Propane Benefits the Environment, Homeowners, and Construction Professionals

In 2024, the Propane Construction Research Program saw a reduction of carbon emissions by 35% per project, while generating updated research and usage data directly from homebuilders. Plus, thousands of homeowners enjoyed lower utility bills and more comfort — confirming that propane is truly the energy for everyone.

The Propane Construction Research Program

The Propane Construction Research Program is designed to collect data from participating builders to inform research about propane use in the residential building industry. As part of the program, participants are required to complete a survey about the homes they build or remodel using propane. Survey topics include any challenges participants may be facing, consumer perceptions, and project details such as comparable selling price and time on market. Completion of the survey must occur before compensation can be released. Qualifying and selected construction professionals receive monetary compensation once emissions data and survey responses are submitted.

Adding Up the Impact

Since 2021, data has been collected from more than 5,300 homes across the country, helping to cut 40,411,000 pounds of carbon output—which is equivalent to the greenhouse gas emissions from 4,276 gasoline-powered vehicles driven for an entire year or the CO2 emissions from the total energy needed to power 2,462 homes for a year. In addition to its impact on emissions and cost savings, the program is also changing the mindset of builders who previously favored all-electric.
