WASHINGTON (September 13, 2017) — Three transit fleets will receive the seventh-annual Top User of Propane Autogas Award from the Propane Education & Research Council at BusCon Expo in Indianapolis. The award celebrates fleets creating healthier environments for riders and cities by using clean, cost-effective, and domestically-produced propane autogas. The awards will be presented during breakfast on Wednesday, Sept. 13, at 8 a.m. in room 123/124 of the Indiana Convention Center.
This year’s recipients are Macon County Transit in Franklin, North Carolina, represented by Transit Director Kim Angel; NET Trans in Johnson City, Tennessee, represented by Candace Gump, director of transportation; and TransPorte in La Porte, Indiana, represented by Tom MacLennan, director of transportation.
“We’re excited to recognize these three transit fleets for their exemplary commitment to caring for their community,” said Michael Taylor, director of autogas business development for PERC. “Using propane autogas offers many advantages for both public and private transit fleets, including the lowest cost of ownership, reduced emissions, and reliable performance — all of which can translate to providing better service to tax payers and customers.”
Following the breakfast, BusCon attendees can hear from Taylor and MacLennan, as well as David Cangany of South Bend Public Transportation Corporation, to learn more about what preparations a fleet should make when implementing alternative fuel vehicles. The educational session, titled “What Really Goes Into Adding Alternative Fuels to Your Fleet,” starts at 9 a.m. in room 126.
Macon County Transit
The Franklin, North Carolina-based Macon County Transit was founded in 1997 to provide the county with public transit. The fleet first added propane autogas vehicles in 2016 and now runs 13 of its 16 Ford 350 and 450 passenger vans on propane autogas. Macon County Transit began using propane autogas to reduce its costs and environmental impact. Since adding propane autogas vehicles, the fleet has seen increased efficiency by eliminating wait time at commercial gasoline stations after installing an on-site refueling tank, as well as requiring fewer stops on long-distance routes by using propane autogas and gasoline bi-fuel systems.
NET Trans provides door-to-door transportation to elderly, disabled, and low-income residents across eight mountainous counties in the northeast corner of Tennessee. Of its 120 vehicles, six were initially converted to propane autogas in January 2016. NET Trans liked what it saw from the fuel, and will convert another 10 vehicles to propane autogas during the second phase of its conversion plans in 2017. NET Trans began converting vehicles to propane autogas to reduce operating costs — on average, a gallon of propane autogas is $1 less than gasoline for the transportation provider. NET Trans says it would recommend propane autogas because the process to implement the alternative fuel into its fleet wasn’t difficult and was cost effective.
TransPorte, in La Porte, Indiana, bought its first two propane autogas buses in 2013, and added three more in 2016. Two more propane autogas buses are set to be delivered this month (September). The transportation service was started by the city in the 1970s and provides dial-a-ride services to city residents as well as links to regional public transit. The area is affected by ozone action days, so reduced emissions were a leading factor for the county in switching to propane autogas.
