Running a taxi service company in Las Vegas is a 24/7/365 operation. Driving between the airport, the Las Vegas Convention Center, and the Strip, the Yellow Checker Star (YCS) Transportation fleet racks up nearly 50 million miles every year. Since the 1980s, the company has been able to slash their fuel and maintenance costs by running its vehicles on propane autogas. As technology began to change, the fleet owners looked for a way to cut fuel costs even more. In 2016, YCS experimented with propane autogas-electric hybrids. Now, more than one-third of the vehicles in the fleet run as hybrid taxis.
Before making the switch, the fleet’s owners wanted to ensure they would have the same optimal performance that they experienced with propane autogas. The service technicians also wanted to make sure the conversions could be installed on the sedans without cutting into precious trunk space necessary for a rider’s luggage. After conducting several rounds of trials, research, and development, the team found success with Toyota Prius propane autogas-electric hybrids. Service technicians were able to convert the gasoline vehicles to propane autogas without compromising on trunk space, and the fleet owners have seen no difference in performance. With every new vehicle class YCS purchases, they are replacing older vehicles with propane autogas hybrids.
22% FEWER GHG EMISSIONS
Typically, propane autogas vehicles can produce up to 22 percent fewer greenhouse gas emissions than gasoline vehicles throughout the full fuel cycle.
YCS continues to experience the same impeccable performance with propane autogas as they’ve seen with gasoline, including horsepower and mileage.
Service technicians with YCS are spending less time on maintenance per vehicle than with gasoline, getting the taxis back into service sooner.
LESS EXPENSIVE THAN GASOLINE
Propane autogas is less expensive for the fleet in relation to gasoline, even when comparing by gasoline gallon equivalent.
HYBRIDS CUT COSTS EVEN MORE
By switching to propane autogas-electric hybrids, the fleet is cutting fuel costs even more. One tank of propane autogas can last through several drivers’ shifts.
