While our homes are undergoing rapid shifts in energy efficiency, the movement to improve indoor air quality has been relatively sluggish. That may be changing with the emergence of advanced fresh air systems, argues Energy Star official Dean Gamble in Builder. “More than 15 states and many above-code programs now require fresh air systems in new homes,” he writes. “These systems follow a schedule to automatically turn on a fan that brings outdoor air in to the home. That’s a big improvement, but just the first step. Advanced fresh air systems are now emerging that do the same while better maintaining comfort, using the least possible energy.” Bottlenecks for this technology are rapidly disappearing, so it may be time to consider it for residential projects.
